Outreach
Sister School
BHE has adopted Mathews Elementary as our sister school. Located in the Clarksville neighborhood, Mathews offers significant diversity with service to many cultures and two homeless shelters.
A message from Sharon Peurrung, Outreach for Sister School Coordinator:
We try to collaborate and support each other’s schools and develop relationships between the children (mainly 6th graders). Mathews is about the same size as BHE, however their student population also includes 20-25 families that are homeless. We have supported them in past years by doing book and clothing drives, adopting some of their most needy families for Christmas, and organizing a “wrapping” party at the YMCA for our 5th grade students. We will be doing many of the same things this school year. Additionally, we’ll be organizing a community clean-up at Barton Springs next spring with our sixth grade classes. I will keep you posted on these events throughout the year.
This year, instead of waiting to adopt a needy family at Christmas, I am creating an “URGENT NEEDS,” email list. The counselor at Mathews will contact me with any URGENT NEEDS that the “at risk” (homeless or formerly homeless) students need, and I will send a request out ONLY to those families wishing to be on the list. For example, they may urgently need warmer clothing for a size 7 kindergarten boy or girl. You would be able to donate slightly used or new items, whatever you have, and could potentially help a lot of students without spending a dime!
Please let me know if you would like to be on this “URGENT NEEDS” list, and THANKS!!!
