PTA Needs You!

We have so many wonderful programs at BHE!  Here are a few important roles to fill:

Courtesy: organize gestures honoring special occasions for BHE teachers and staff (birthdays, births, etc).  This is a fun and appreciated position and great for a working parent.
Partners in Education:  The Partners in Education Chair sources businesses willing to partner with BHE and recognizes them with thank you notes, links on our website and PTA newsletter mentions.  Great for a working parent as work is done off campus.
Spanish Exploratory Committee Co-chair: lead efforts to gather information about the feasibility of implementing Spanish classes at BHE

Contact Jade Greene, our Volunteer Coordinator with any questions and also visit her online sign ups to get involved.

Annual Fund

Isn’t it exciting to see your child learn to read, or improve his/her reading skills!  Don’t you just love to see their heads buried in a book or bringing home a new book they checked out at the BHE library.  *Studies show that learning to read is not a natural process that spontaneously happens on its own.  The BHE PTA is committed to providing programs that will enrich and enhance your child’s learning experience. Your Annual Fund Dollars help to fund Library books, author visits and the Book Buddies Program among other things. Help us to continue providing these resources each year for your child.  Donate to the Annual Fund today.  Go to www.BHEPTA.com and click on Fundraising, then Annual Fund.  Or simply drop a check in the PTA mailbox.  It is that easy.  Thanks for your support!

Calling all Community Heroes!

We need your help.  We are looking for parent/community volunteers to talk with classrooms about careers.  Throughout the month of the November, guidance lessons will focus on community helpers/heroes and careers.  If you know someone who would be interested in talking with a class about how s/he is a hero in our community, please email our counselor, Sheila Wessels with contact information.

In addition to career lessons, the library will also be having its book fair, “Here’s to our Heroes:  Reading Saves the Day” that focuses on community helpers as heroes.  If you are interested in reading to groups of students in the library, please email Jenny Day.  Please be a part of this wonderful event!  Career Day will be on Monday, November 22, 2010 running from 7:45 to 9:00am.  Reading to students in the library will during the week of November 15th.  Thank you to all of our Community Heroes!!!

Veggie Garden Volunteers Needed

Did you know that Barton Hills Elementary has a vegetable garden?  It was started last year and is located between the gym and the portables.  It’s time to start planning our fall garden, so we are looking for student and parent volunteers from every grade.  We will need volunteers to lead planting, watering and weeding, as well as “garden mentors” for each grade.  Prior gardening experience is not required.  There will be a short information meeting for interested parents on Sept. 15 at 7:45 in the library.  Contact Beatriz Mejia if interested.  Please also let Beatriz know if you are interested in helping, but are unable to attend the meeting.
Hope to see you soon!
~Beatriz Mejia (mom to Gabriel, 3rd and Lucas, 5th)
~Amy Bluntzer (mom to Tyler, K and Tanner, 2nd)

First Day of School Tips

  • During the first few days of school parking can be a challenge.  Allow extra time.  Please be mindful of our neighbors.
  • Don’t block driveways and avoid walking through yards.
  • Remember the new state law prohibiting cell phone use while driving through a school zone (unless you use a hands-free device).
  • Use the crosswalks!
  • Deliver students directly to their classroom.  Beginning Tuesday 8/24 children arriving before 7:35 will be dropped off in the Cafeteria.
  • KINDERGARTEN ONLY: delivery your little ones to the classroom all week long; Cafeteria drop-off begins for you on Monday 8/30.

New Parents Coffee:

The PTA would like to welcome all parents who are new to BHE.  We will have coffee and doughnuts in the library from 7:45 – 8:30 am the first day of school.  Please swing by for this informal gathering and get to know other parents at BHE.  Whether you are dancing in celebration or wiping away tears, come by for a cup of joe.  We’d love to meet you and welcome you to our school community.

Meet the Teacher – Friday, August 20th

Teachers open their classrooms from 11:00 – 12:00 for parents and students to get acquainted and familiarize themselves with their new surroundings (and see their buddies!).  Teachers will have sign-up sheets specific to volunteering in your child’s class. Please also visit the Library, Art room, Gymnasium and Music room and say hello to these awesome teachers.

PTA will be set up in the Cafeteria from 10:30 – 12:00.  Please check in here to:

  • pick up your child’s 2010 BHE T-shirt (free for every BHE student)
  • learn about this year’s Academic Enrichment programs
  • get info on BHE Boy and Girl Scout troops
  • drop your donation to the BHE Annual Fund (our no-hassle fundraiser)
  • learn about and sign up for volunteer PTA opportunities
