Spanish Forum Report

On Thursday, June 10th, 19 parents and 3 BHE teachers attended the Spanish Forum held in the library.  Principal Kati Achtermann discussed considerations for hiring and fully funding a teacher and recounted BHE’s experience with PTA funding Spanish in the past (prior to 2002).  PTA President Kelly Tagle gave an overview of current PTA fundraising and budget expenditures.  Many ideas for implementation of Spanish Instruction were discussed.  The main concern raised by the staff is the loss of core curriculum instruction time.   Several parents volunteered to contact schools who already have established language instruction to ask how their programs operate.

Time and date of our next meeting is Monday, Sept. 20th from 5:45-6:45 in the BHE library.  Current chair is Nicole Austin and we are currently seeking a Co-ChairAnyone is welcome to join the committee, and you don’t have to come to meetings to be emailed with updates.

School Supply Ordering

Open Forum to Discuss Spanish Language Instruction at BHE

Thursday, June 10th, 6:00 pm
Barton Hills Elementary Library

In the spring PTA Budget Survey, there was overwhelming parent feedback regarding the desire to have a Spanish Teacher on campus.  If you are a parent interested in the implementation of Spanish Language instruction at Barton Hills Elementary, please join us June 10th.   We will be discussing the many challenges involved with introducing a foreign language class not supported by the school district.

Our timeline follows:

  • Program Investigation and Planning: 2010–2011 school year.
  • Potential Program Implementation: 2011–2012 school year.

We need enthusiastic parents willing to serve on an exploratory committee. Let’s come together, investigate, lay groundwork, and determine whether we can pull this off!  Kati Achtermann and PTA board members will be present.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Parents of Barton Hills Elementary Kindergartners 2010 – 2011: We have planned several playdates during the summer so that kids and parents have a chance to meet before school starts.  Please mark your calendars and join us!
